Welcome to the new edition of PHM Exchange- a newsletter from the People's Health Movement. PHM exchange is sent to our activists and colleagues who have joined us over the last 25 years!! We bring to you news from our PHM country circles and networks from around the world.

This year is special for us. We are celebrating 25 years of the People’s Health Movement since we formally launched the movement at the first People’s Health Assembly in Savar, Bangladesh, in 2000. Global Health Watch 7 (GHW) is the flagship publication of the People's Health Movement (PHM) and co-produced with other health justice organisations. Since its first edition in 2005, GHW has been widely perceived as an alternative and a definitive voice critically reporting on the state of the world’s health. The seventh edition-‘GHW7: Mobilizing for Health Justice,’ released this year, is available online to read as a single book, downloadable as a PDF or available in an on-demand print version.

Across South Africa, community-based Health Forums are proving to be a powerful force for change in the health system. From Manenberg and Gugulethu to KSD, Phokwane, and Witzenberg, these grassroots structures are tackling everything from local clinic accountability to climate change, always with a firm commitment to equity, dignity, and justice. On 8 October 2025, members from different health forums came together online to share their experiences and inspire each other. The People's Health Movement (global) and the Action Front for Palestine (Colombia) are organizing and promoting a global campaign to help rebuild Palestine's health system and guarantee Palestinians' right to health.

Palestine's health system was already in crisis, with years of occupation, blockade, and restrictions. Israel's genocidal war since October 2023 against Gaza has further worsened conditions, almost completely obliterating the health system. The funds will go directly to the three Palestinian health organizations to help them rebuild and buy medicine and medical equipment:

• Health Work Committees (HWC) - West Bank
• Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) – West Bank and Gaza
• Al Awda Community Health Association (AWDA) – Gaza

Three PHM members- Aziz Rhali (Morocco), Hanne Boselaers (Belgium) and James Smith (London)- were aboard the flotilla this time attempting to bring humanitarian aid and assistance to the victims of the war in Gaza. Hanne and Aziz were detained by Israeli occupation forces in October as the flotilla approached Gaza, but were eventually released. After the ceasefire announcement, we remain optimistically cautious. “There is no peace and there is no plan,” Dr. Mustafa Barghouti emphasized during a discussion hosted by the People’s Health Movement (PHM). The third edition of the Nyéléni forum gathered more than 700 participants from around the world on 6-13 Sept ‘25 and was held in Kandy, Sri Lanka.  PHM was an organiser and a strong presence in this forum, with our members joining the forum from different regions.

Rooted in food sovereignty, the defense of the commons, the right to health, climate justice, feminism, social and solidarity economies, agroecology, and Indigenous knowledge, Nyéléni aims to spark a global paradigm shift in response to today’s economic, political, social, and environmental crises. PHM Nepal is hosting a National People's Health University (NPHU) course from 13-17 November ‘25. The NPHU is a national adaptation of PHM’s capacity-building program, International People’s Health University (IPHU). The program will also see a national launch of Global Health Watch 7 and a celebration of 25 years of the People's Health Movement.

The Third Social Summit of the Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean will be held from 7-8 Nov ’25 in the city of Santa Marta, Colombia, in the context of the meeting between the governments of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union.

In addition to condemning imperialist and Zionist aggression against the peoples and governments of Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Palestine, and others in the region, the Social Summit aims to agree on internationalist solidarity actions for the economic, social, and cultural integration of the region.

PHM’s contribution to the Social Summit will focus on defending the right to health from a comprehensive perspective that guarantees pharmaceutical autonomy and ensures equitable access to health technologies in the region, reducing dependence on imports and transnational interests.

We will urge Latin American states to reorient innovation towards the public interest by:
• making full use of the safeguards of the TRIPS Agreement
• implementing public policies that guarantee the financing and local production of strategic technologies
• strengthening joint public procurement mechanisms and promoting regional cooperation in research
• ensuring decentralised production and regulatory harmonisation.

“There is no peace and no plan for Gaza,” health workers warn in response to the so-called peace plan announced by US President Donald Trump. In reality, healthcare in both Gaza and the West Bank remains under relentless pressure from the Israeli occupation through the continued targeting of health infrastructure and severe restrictions on the entry of essential supplies.

En toda Sudáfrica, los foros de salud comunitarios están demostrando ser una poderosa fuerza de cambio en el sistema sanitario. Estas estructuras de base están abordando todo tipo de cuestiones, desde la responsabilidad de los policlínicos locales hasta el cambio climático, siempre con un firme compromiso con la equidad, la dignidad y la justicia. El 8 de octubre de 2025, miembros de diferentes foros de salud se reunieron en línea para compartir sus experiencias e inspirarse mutuamente. El MSP global y el Frente de Acción por Palestina (Colombia) están organizando y promoviendo una campaña global para ayudar a reconstruir el sistema sanitario de Palestina (especialmente Gaza) y garantizar el derecho a la salud de los palestinos.

El sistema sanitario palestino ya se encontraba en crisis, tras años de ocupación, bloqueo y restricciones. La guerra genocida de Israel contra Gaza desde octubre de 2023 ha empeorado aún más las condiciones, destruyendo casi por completo el sistema sanitario. Los fondos a recaudarse se destinarán directamente a las tres organizaciones de salud palestinas afiliadas al MSP para ayudarles a reconstruir y comprar medicamentos y equipos médicos. Estos afiliados son:

• Comités de Trabajo Sanitario (HWC) - Cisjordania
• Sociedad Palestina de Ayuda Médica (PMRS) - Cisjordania y Gaza
• Al Awda Community Health Association (AWDA) - Gaza

Tres miembros del MSP, Aziz Rhali, Hanne Boselaers y James Smith, viajaron a bordo de la flotilla con el objetivo de llevar ayuda humanitaria y asistencia a las víctimas de la guerra en Gaza. Hanne y Aziz fueron detenidos por las fuerzas de ocupación israelíes en octubre, cuando la flotilla se acercaba a Gaza, pero finalmente fueron liberados. La tercera edición del foro Nyéléni reunió a más de 700 participantes de todo el mundo del 6 al 13 de septiembre de 2025 y se celebró en Kandy, Sri Lanka. El PHM fue uno de los organizadores y tuvo una fuerte presencia en este foro, con la participación de nuestros miembros de diferentes regiones.

Arraigado en la soberanía alimentaria, la defensa de los bienes comunes, el derecho a la salud, la justicia climática, el feminismo, las economías sociales y solidarias, la agroecología y los conocimientos indígenas, Nyéléni tiene como objetivo provocar un cambio de paradigma global en respuesta a las crisis económicas, políticas, sociales y medioambientales actuales. El PHM Nepal organiza un curso de la Universidad Nacional de Salud Popular (IPHU) del 13 al 17 de noviembre de 2025. La IPHU es una adaptación nacional del programa de capacitación de PHM. El programa también incluirá el lanzamiento nacional del Global Health Watch 7 y la celebración de los 25 años del MSP.

La Tercera Cumbre Social de los Pueblos de América Latina y el Caribe se celebro del 7 al 8 de noviembre de 2025 en la ciudad de Santa Marta, Colombia, en el contexto de la reunión entre los gobiernos de la Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC) y la Unión Europea.

Además de condenar la agresión imperialista y sionista contra los pueblos y gobiernos de Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Palestina y otros de la región, la Cumbre Social tiene como objetivo acordar acciones de solidaridad internacionalista para la integración económica, social y cultural de la región.

La contribución de PHM a la Cumbre Social se centrará en la defensa del derecho a la salud desde una perspectiva integral que garantice la autonomía farmacéutica y asegure el acceso equitativo a las tecnologías sanitarias en la región, reduciendo la dependencia de las importaciones y los intereses transnacionales.

Instamos a los Estados latinoamericanos a reorientar la innovación hacia el interés público mediante:
• el pleno uso de las salvaguardias del Acuerdo sobre los ADPIC
• la aplicación de políticas públicas que garanticen la financiación y la producción local de tecnologías estratégicas
• el fortalecimiento de los mecanismos de contratación pública conjunta y la promoción de la cooperación regional en materia de investigación
• la garantía de la producción descentralizada y la armonización normativa.

"No hay paz ni plan para Gaza", advierten lo/as trabajadores de salud en respuesta al llamado plan de paz anunciado por el presidente estadounidense Donald Trump. En realidad, la atención de salud tanto en Gaza como en Cisjordania sigue sometida a la agresión implacable de la ocupación israelí, que continúa atacando las infraestructuras de salud y aplicando severas restricciones a la entrada de suministros esenciales.
